MIAMI GARDENS, Fla- The STU women's basketball team was in action Saturday afternoon taking on the Coastal Georgia Mariners inside the Fernandez Center. STU defeated the Mariners 76 to 66.
Nickerline Montina would get off to a hot start scoring 5 early points to give STU the early lead. The first half would be a tightly contested affair with each team trading baskets and the lead early on. Courtney Saunds was particularly efficient early on scoring 6 points for the Mariners.
Brittany Clark would also come up big for the Mariners she also scored 6 points early on to tie the score at 21 with about six minutes to go in the first half. The first half would come to a close with STU up 33 to 31 after a very tightly contested half. Stu shot the ball 23% from the field but was 81% from the free throw line where they go the majority of their points.
Coastal Georgia shot the ball about 37% from the field and was only 1 for 5 from three point range. Maria Marshall and Courtney Saunds lead all scorers for Coastal Georgia with 8 points apiece.
STU was lead by Costina Cousins who had an outstanding first half with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Nickerline Montina chipped in with 8 points and was 2 of 3 from the line.
The second half would get underway and STU would take a 40 to 36 lead. STU would jump out to a 53 to 40 lead with about 10 minutes to go in the second half.
Nickerline Montina would continue her impressive play down the stretch for STU scoring 23 points and 5 rebounds for an outstanding effort. The Bobcats would take 61 to 49 lead before Coach Robin Harmony would call a full timeout. Roxy Munoz chipped in with 13 points and hit several free throws down the stretch to preserve the lead for the Bobcats. The second half would come to a close and STU would improve to a 5-1 record. STU shot the ball extremely efficiently about 77% from the field and Costina Cousins finished with an impressive double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
“We got outplayed and St. Thomas wanted it more”, Coastal Georgia head coach Betsy Harris said.
