Miami Gardens, FL— On an overcast Friday afternoon the St Thomas Bobcats softball team began a three game series with conference foe Ave Maria. STU cruised to a 9-0 victory taking game one of the series.
The Bobcats got off to a quick start with the first six batters reaching base, five of those coming across the plate. Sasha Horton continued her sensational freshman campaign with a single, which probably would have been a double, had it not hit third. She was followed by two hit batsmen and a Mo King 2 RBI hit. The bats went quite as Samantha Crews went on to retire the 12 of the next 13 batters.
Following a 1 hour rain delay Brenda Emerson entered in relief and picked up right where starter Denise Prieto left off retiring all six batters she faced.
The STU bats awoke again in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Bobcats scored 4 runs to end the game via the mercy rule. Brenda Emerson led off the inning with a walk which was followed by singles from Monica Garcia and Cindy Castrillon. Senior Amada Fernandez laced a double to center field scoring Garcia and Emerson. Horton ended the game with one swing as her single to right brought in Castrillon and Fernandez to cap the scoring.
Games two and three take place tomorrow afternoon at Bobcat Field with first pitch set for high noon. Go Bobcats.
