MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The STU women's soccer team took on cross street rivals Florida Memorial University Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Field. FMU came into the match with a 0-3 record. STU came in off an impressive win on the road and was looking to capitalize on their recent success. STU won the match 6-0.
STU threatened in the third minute of the first half with a shot on goal by Melony Poviones that was scooped up by FMU goalkeeper. Poviones would give it a go and take another shot on goal in the 5th minute. The first breakthrough of the game would come in the 6th minute with a beautiful curling cross from STU by Miranda Goransson that was headed in by Victoria Shahbaz to put STU up 1 to nil.
STU would threaten again in the 11th minute with a shot on goal byDanelle Nguyen that was denied by FMU goalkeeper. STU would take several shots on goal and maintain possession and dictate play in the first half. This in turn created more scoring opportunities for the home side.
Poviones had a solid first half in the midfield taking a shot in the 23rd minute of the first half that was denied.
STU would score again in the 23rd minute with an unassisted goal by Amanda Trujillo to give STU a commanding 2-0 lead. STU would capitalize on their lead with another goal by Monica Lozano in the 35th minute assisted by Sara Mira the ball was deflected off an FMU defender and ricochet in. STU would score yet another goal byAmanda Trujillo a dangerous cross was played into the box byChristina Salazar to Trujillo that was stopped on a dime and shot into the net to give STU a 4-0 lead to end the half.
STU's coach was very happy with her team's performance after the match. “I'm very happy with our performance she said I like the way we are moving the ball and we played as a team.”
Trujillo was surprised by her performance. “I was surprised I put them in, but it was my teammates that made it happen.” Trujillo said.
STU would come out in the second half guns blazing with a quick shot on goal by STU Trujillo that was saved by FMU. STU was unstoppable in this one in the 13th of the second half STU was awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and STU's Danelle Nguyen kicked a dangerous whipping shot towards the middle of the goal post that beat FMU keeper for the games 5th goal.
STU's coach Michelle Smith was also very pleased with Melony's performance after the match. “She is playing very well.”
STU would continue to dominate possession in the second half and create more scoring chances on goal which would be the story of the match. FMU looked helpless in defense for most of the contest. This would get interesting as a team caution was given to FMU's bench for language. STU was not done scoring in this one as a curling cross was played into the penalty area by Alicia Romeo-Gallo that was put in by Sara Mira for a whopping 6th goal in the fixture.
