10/21/2012 7:05:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas women's soccer team played the 16th ranked team in the nation to a scoreless tie on Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field.  With the tie, along with a 5-0 win over Johnson & Wales on Friday, the Bobcats improved to 8-3-2 overall and 5-1-2 in The Sun Conference, good for the third-best record in the conference.

St. Thomas dominated play for much of the 110 minutes vs. Northwood, a team which entered Sunday's game with a perfect 8-0 record in conference play.  The Bobcats had multiple quality chances to score with nine shots on goal compared to just two shots on goal by the Seahawks.  In total, St. Thomas outshot Northwood 21-9 and had seven corner kicks, including six in the second half, compared to just two corner kicks for the visitors.

Senior goalkeeper Victoria Shahbaz earned the shutout in goal for the full 110 minutes of play.  The St. Thomas defense, led by central defenders Emelie Johansson and Courtney Trujillo, protected the STU goal area throughout the game.  As a result, Shahbaz was only called upon to make two saves, with one coming on a Northwood free kick.

On Friday, the Bobcats had an easy time with Johnson & Wales shutting out the Wildcats by the score of 5-0.  Four different Bobcats scored in the game with Melony Poviones (2), Ashley Taylor, Courtney Trujillo, and Monica Lozano all netting goals.  Amanda Trujillo had three assists and Sara Mira added one assist.  Poviones arguably had the season's most impressive goal vs. Johnson & Wales, scoring on a free kick to the upper corner of the net from 27 yards in the 79th minute.

With the back-to-back shutouts, including the double overtime shutout to Northwood, the St. Thomas defense did not allow a goal in 200 minutes of play over the weekend.  The last goal allowed by St. Thomas was a goal by Warner in the second half of a 10-1 STU victory on October 14.  The shutout streak for St. Thomas is at 225 minutes, dating back to the Warner goal.

On the season, the Bobcats have shut out their opponents in five of their 13 games and held opponents to one goal or less in 10 games.

St. Thomas wraps up regular season play with Senior Day on Thursday at 4 p.m. vs. Florida Memorial at Bobcat Field.
