Ashley Taylor scored her first goal of the season for the game winner, the first of three Bobcat goals over a ten-minute span. With the win, St. Thomas advances to play Thomas University in the conference semifinals to be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bobcat Field in Miami Gardens.
Senior forward
Sara Mira scored the game's first goal in the 29th minute off an assist by senior
Christina Salazar. The goal was the 23rd of the season for Mira, the leading goal scorer in the Sun Conference.
The Bobcats held their 1-0 lead until the 58th minute when JWU's Deana Garbino scored off an assist by Jainee Smith to tie the game. The game remained tied for nearly 17 minutes until Taylor's game-winner on a play where the defender pushed up to finish a goal off the Jagryd pass.
Taylor's goal sparked a goal-scoring flurry by the Bobcats as a goal by freshman forward
Amyah Banks off an assist by junior
Sarrah Granda came less than three minutes later. Senior midfielder
Melony Poviones scored off an assist by Mira in the 85th minute to give the Bobcats even more insurance en route to the victory.
The goal by Poviones was her 22nd, second behind Mira amongst the conference leaders. The assist was Mira's 12th of the year which also leads the conference as does her 58 points. The two seniors, who were teammates at Plantation American Heritage HS, have combined for a whopping 45 goals, 20 assists, and 110 points this season.
St. Thomas will face Thomas on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the winner advancing to the conference championships against the winner of the SCAD-Embry-Riddle match. Live video of Saturday's game will be available at
