MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Southeastern University drew first blood with a 6-3 victory in game one of the doubleheader against St. Thomas, but the Bobcats bounced back in game two to win it 10-8.
In the top of the first,
Jessica Matias bunted and reached on a base hit.
Christina Horton then singled to right, allowing Matias to advance to second.
Sasha Horton then reached first on a fielder's choice, but a wild throw by the shortstop allowed both runners to advance and Matias to score.
Danielle Borrelli loaded the bases when she reached on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder and later scored, along with S. Horton, on a wild throw by the third baseman – Southeastern's third error of the inning.
Down by one in the seventh, S. Horton started STU's 6-run, 6-hit rally with a single to left field. Borrelli followed with a double to center and
Kandyce Redondo reached on an infield single to third.
Natalie Sacramento's base hit brought home Horton and Borrelli, and sister Christina Sacramento followed with a single of her own to score Redondo.
Kristen Scott reached first on the fielder's choice, but an error by the shortstop allowed
Carson Catasus – pinch running for C. Sacramento – to reach second safely. With the bases loaded, Matias drew a walk that forced N. Sacramento to cross home plate and C. Horton hit an RBI-single down the left field line to score Catasus. A passed ball then gave way for STU's tenth and final run, as Scott rounded home from third base.
After Friday's slugfests, STU found itself in a pitching duel with Warner University on Saturday. In game one of the doubleheader,
Brenda Emerson allowed just five hits, but the two runs given up were just enough to top STU, 2-1.
Game two was an even tighter match, as both teams remained scoreless until the last frame. Pitcher
Cristina Sacramento singled through the left side before
Christina Horton reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed
Linett Perez – pinch running for Sacramento – to score. Horton earned the only RBI of the game as Sacramento completed the shutout, 1-0.
