Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla- St. Thomas (7-4) took another two victories at the Spring Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the National Training Center, defeating Bethel College (0-4) 11-3 and Grace College (2-7) 6-4. With the two wins Tuesday, the Bobcats improved to 6-1 in games played at the Spring Tournament in Clermont.
Meghan Riddle had another stunning performance in game one going 3-for-3 with a triple, double, single, and a walk, while also scoring the last run to instill the mercy rule ending the game in the fifth inning. The game broke open in the second inning scoring five runs in the second to give the Bobcats a 6-0 lead. Riddle started off with a single, then
Jessica Matias got on with a base on balls.
Melody Grafals later bunted to third drawing a throwing error bringing home Riddle and Matias. Grafals later scored on a triple by
Greta Longagnani.
Jennifer Acevedo started for the Bobcats in game one, pitching two innings and retiring six of the eight faced.
Amber Reid came in to relieve Acevedo for an inning and two thirds.
Bridget Ruhl came in for the rest of the fourth and finished the game to record the win for STU.
In game two vs. Grace College, the Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in the first, Riddle again led off the game with a single to right center. Following right behind Riddle came
Amanda Penton with a bunt single. Grafals once again drove home Riddle and later scored on an RBI single by Jaime Gonzalez. The lead will later grow to seven in the top of the fourth with singles from Matias and
Amanda Furar. Matias later scored on a bunt from
Alexis Castroman, who then scored along with Furar on an RBI-single from
Michelle Murch.
The Bobcats held on to their lead in the seventh as the Lancers rallied to score three runs on a bases-clearing double. Down two, pitcher
Jessica Castiglione held off the rally, forcing a fly ball to Longagnani to record the final out.
Castiglione had an outstanding outing, pitching the entire game and receiving the win for the Bobcats.
STU returns to action for its last game of the Spring Tournament on Wednesday night at 7 p.m against Mount Vernon Nazarene University at the National Training Center.
