ACEVEDO MASTERFUL AS STU SWEEPS PERU STATE

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (10-9) swept a doubleheader over Peru State (3-9) on Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Field.  STU won the first game 9-0 in five innings, and then completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory in game two.


Starting pitcher Jennifer Acevedo (3-2) was masterful on the mound for St. Thomas.  In the first game, Acevedo pitched five scoreless innings and nearly pitched a perfect game, allowing just one hit and walking none.  She then started the second game and pitched three shutout innings, allowing just four hits and one walk.  In total for the doubleheader, Acevedo went eight shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk.


In the first game, the Bobcats recorded a huge first inning with six runs as a two-RBI single by Melody Graflas started the scoring parade.  Alexis Castroman hit an RBI-single to score Grafals.  RBI's by Amanda Furar, McKenna Delaware and Michelle Murch continued the scoring onslaught in the first.


St. Thomas would add three more runs in the fourth to take the lead 9-0 and invoke the mercy rule as Acevedo closed out the complete-game win.


In game two, STU jumped on PSC early with two wins in the first inning on a RBI-double by Meghan Riddle that scored Jessica Matias.  Jamie Gonzalez then recorded a ground-out RBI that scored Riddle.  St. Thomas then reeled off five runs in the second highlighted by a 2-RBI single by Matias and a an RBI-single by Melody Grafals.   In the fourth, Peru State scored two runs to cut the lead to 7-2.  Matias scored home and Castroman hit an RBI single to score Riddle to complete the scoring.


St. Thomas returns to action with a tournament in Clermont, Fla. beginning Friday.
