Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The 25th ranked St. Thomas Women's Tennis team went on the road and defeated 22nd ranked Coastal Georgia 5-4 in a tightly contested battle between the two Sun Conference opponents.
STU opened the dual match, trailing 1-2 after the conclusion of the three doubles matches as the team of
Cynthia Diaz and
Naomi Maehama won 8-2 in number three doubles.
The singles competition is where the Bobcats truly shined and ultimately won the match of the 20th ranked Mariners.
In number two singles,
Cassandra Lemieux won in three sets (6-1, 5-7, 6-3), while Andrea Gonzalez used two tiebreakers to win 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) in number three singles.
Cynthia Diaz won a tight first set 7-5, then swept her opponent 6-0 in the second set to win number five singles. Natdeilys de Armas Acosta cruised to victory 6-0, 6-2 in number six singles.
In total, the Bobcats won four of the six singles matches to take the dual event 5-4.
On the men's side, STU fell to 15th ranked Coastal Georgia 7-2.
The Mariners took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, despite the Bobcats winning 8-6 in number three doubles behind the play of
Dimitri Bird and
Fabrice Bissainthe. STU's
Rasmus Lindstrom won in number two singles 6-1, 6-0.
Sun Conference play continues for the Bobcat tennis teams next weekend when STU travels to Babson Park, Fla. to take on Webber International on Saturday at 1 p.m.
