MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (November 1, 2023) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team will head to Winter Haven, Fla. To participate in the SUN/SSAC Crossover Challenge. The Bobcats will face
Brewton-Parker College and
William Carey (Miss.).
St. Thomas will first face the Brewton-Parker College Barons. This will be the Bobcats fifth match up against the Barons, going 3-1 in series history. Brewton-Parker is currently 2-0 this season, defeating
College of Coastal Georgia and
Bryan College (Tenn.). Last season, the Barons went 22-8 overall and 13-5 in Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) play.
In their last meeting in the 2022 SUN/SSAC Crossover Challenge in Montgomery, Alabama, the Bobcats emerged victorious with a close score of 75-73. The Bobcats defeated the Barons twice more in series history. In 2012, at the Fernandez Family Center, STU secured a hard-fought overtime victory against Brewton-Parker University, winning 69-63. The Bobcats defeated the Barons again on the road in 2011 with a final score of 68-65. The Bobcats will head to Winter Haven to face the Barons on Thursday, November 2nd at 2 p.m.
The Bobcats will then face William Carey (Miss.) during the Crossover Challenge. This will be the first match up between the Bobcats and the Crusaders. The Crusaders are 1-0 this season after defeating Texas A&M-Texarkana in their home opener 84-55. William Carey will face Ave Maria University on Thursday during the Crossover Challenge for the first time in 10 years. The Crusaders traveled to Ave Maria, Fla. to match up against the Gyrenes in 2013, losing 54-77. The Bobcats will face the Barons on Friday, November 3rd at 12 p.m.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
- Camilla Flefil led the team in scoring in their season opener against New College of Florida with 25 points. Flefil came off the bench and dominated, leading not only on the scoreboard but in steals as well with five.
- Brooke Bogatz and Bria Brown also played integral roles in the defeat against the Mighty Banyans, both starting and the match and growing the Bobcats' lead. Brown had 23 points while Bogatz had 22. Bogatz also notched six assists during the game.
- Marta Franco also had an impressive game against New College, recording eight points during the match up and nine assists, leading the team in assists for the game.
After the challenge concludes, the Bobcats will remain on the road, facing
Florida National University on Tuesday, November 14th at 7 p.m. in Miami, Fla.
