#13 Women's Tennis Dominates Racers Classic to Remain Perfect

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 LIMA, Ohio (February 27, 2023) – Ohio's cold weather could not tame the heat that is fuming from the St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Tennis team (7-0) who is off to one of the best starts in program history. The Bobcats traveled to Lima, Ohio to compete in the Racers Classic which featured some of the best teams in the country. St. Thomas went a perfect 3-0 highlighted by an upset victory over no. 10 Indiana Wesleyan.
 
The weekend started out with a double-header on Friday playing host, University of Northwestern Ohio and cruising to victory at 4-0. Later that night, St. Thomas took on #19 Indiana Tech and had another stellar outing at 4-0. All matches were played to clinch point.
 
Even after a late finish to Friday, STU was ready for the challenge that was awaiting Saturday morning against the no. 10 Wildcats. The Bobcats picked up their second upset victory of the season this one in dominating fashion.
 
UNOH – Recap
The doubles point went in favor of St. Thomas securing their fourth doubles point of the season to open the match. Courts two and three made quick work of the Racers to take the 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Jenesie Burgos and Jamison Geoffreys easily took court three 6-1. Then senior duo Lia Pena and Annie Carrera secured the point with a 6-3 win on two.
 
Heading into singles play, Carrera rolled through her opponent on three at 6-0, 6-2. Pena work a win on one at 6-1, 6-4. The match was clinched with reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week, Isabella Ciancaglini-Ribera, taking a win on four in straight sets at 6-2, 6-2.
 
#19 Indiana Tech – Recap
The Bobcats had the upper hand in doubles play as the Warriors were down a court which gave STU the automatic win on three. Ciancaglini-Ribera and Carme Ibanez Navarro teamed up on one to clinch the doubles points with a 6-1 win.
 
Singles play got going with Ibanez Navarro getting a win on two at 6-3, 6-2. Pena battled it out on one and took the court in straight sets at 6-3, 7-6. Ciancaglini-Ribera was able to clinch the win as her opponent retired after trailing 2-4 against the Bobcat on four.
 
#10 Indiana Wesleyan – Recap
In the most anticipated match of the trip, St. Thomas started off with a great start as Pena and Carrera swept their opponent on two at 6-0. Indiana Wesleyan was able to take court three over Geoffreys and Burgos in a tough one at 7-5. It all came down to court one with the no. 12 nationally ranked doubles team on one side and the Bobcats battling on the other. STU was able to come on top and 7-5 to clinch the point and head into singles play with all the momentum.
 
The heat was turned up in singles play as the Bobcats locked in to take the dominant victory. Indiana Wesleyan had a lot of ranked individuals, but that did not stop St. Thomas. Ciancaglini-Ribera kicked it off with a 6-1, 6-0 win on four over no. 20 in the East region, Snider. Burgos came up big on six to take Mellinger, 6-3 in both sets. Senior Annie Carrera clinched the match on three taking down no. 39 nationally ranked Barger who is ranked no. 10 in the East region. The match was played out with everyone having a final score. Geoffreys took court five with a tiebreaker win in set one 7[7]-6 and a 6-3 win in set two. Ibanez Navarro had the biggest win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on two over no. 15 Dveksler who is no. 4 in the region. Pena was the lone one to fall against no. 27 nationally Munoz.
 
St. Thomas will look to continue to make history with a tough Sun Conference opener at home against no. 1 Keiser on Wednesday, March 1 at the STU Tennis Courts.
