MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 28, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Track and Field team hosted the 2024 Sun Conference Championships for the first time over the weekend. After a successful weekend, the STU Men's Track & Field squad placed runner-up at the competition, earning six bronze, three silver, and four gold medals at the event.
In Track events, Roger Reyes had a successful outing, earning a silver and gold. Reyes finished first in the Men's 1500m Race, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:05.51. Reyes earned his silver medal in the Men's 800m Final. David Perez, Kevin Gonzalez, and Parker Doll added to the Bobcats' success. Perez finished third in the Men's 10,000m Race, finishing with a time of 33:54.63. Gonzalez added a bronze in the Men's 5,000m Race Walk, maintaining great form and finishing with a time of 37:53.07. Doll earned his bronze in the Men's 3,000m Steeplechase, crossing the finish line with a time of 10:13.90. The Bobcats had an outstanding performance when it came to relays, placing in the top two in the 4x100, 4x400, and the 4x800. In the Men's 4x100 Relay, Colton Weismore, Bradley Bowlin, Jalen Tanner, and Caleb Shakespeare took second place with a time of 41.16. The Men's 4x400 Relay also took silver, Kenzie Knowles, Jonathan Petit-Frere, Mkhori Crabbe, and Malik John earning their medals with a time of 3:16.72. Both the 4x100 and 4x400 qualified for national competition under the NAIA B Standard. The Men's 4x800 Relay team took the gold, with a squad of Jonathan Petit-Frere, Christopher Reid, Jamari Benjamin, Kenzie Knowles, they crossed the finish line with a time of 8:17.55.
In field events, Alex Camarca had a strong outing in Men's Javelin. Camarca earned national qualifier status under NAIA A Standard for his first-place performance, with his throw of 57.12m. Demario Allen also earned a gold medal, finishing first in Men's Pole Vault with a finish of 4.25m. Jonah Hill and Kejar Stanfield each added bronze medals to the Bobcats' tally, Hill placing third in the Men's High Jump with a height of 1.92m, and Stanfield placing third in the Men's Hammer Throw with a distance of 44.96m.
